Personal Reflection for NeWater Visit

1. What are the 3 key takeaways from today’s visit?

Water is precious in Singapore. Although there are already 4 water 'taps' in Singapore, we still have to find more water sources so that the sustainability of water can be maintained.

The 4 water 'taps' in Singapore are, importing water from Malaysia, water catchment of rain water, desalinate sea waters and making NeWater.

NeWater helps in the sustainability of water in the reservoirs by pumping a fraction of the total production of NeWater into the water reservoirs.

2. Name 2 concepts that you have learnt today during the visit.

NeWater is produced after going through different processes and it is usable and will not harm our health.

NeWater is an example of indirect potable use of water (IPU)

3. What is the 1 interesting thing that you have learnt today?

There are a few interesting things I learnt today. Since this is a reflection for the learning journey, I think I shall record down all the things I have learnt today.

(1) NeWater does not contain any minerals and nutrients.

(2) The purpose of getting the public to drink the NeWater is for them to try out the NeWater and let those who have psychological barriers to be assured that the NeWater is drinkable and it will not affect their health.

(3) There is no advertisement of NeWaters because it does not contain any minerals and nutrients so it is not for consumptions.

(4) A fraction of NeWater is pumped into the water reservoirs in Singapore. This helps to maintain the sustainability of water in Singapore even during bad times (as in when there is a decrease amount of rainfall)

(5) The NeWater provides 15 percent of water requirement in Singapore now.

(6) Many industries are using NeWater because if they choose to use the tap water, they will need to spend more money, time and effort to make the tap water usable for them. The using of NeWater by industries actually benefits us indirectly. When the industries are using the NeWater, more tap water, which contains minerals and nutrients, will be used by us.
This is advantageous for both the industries and ourselves.

4. What are the things that you can do to help with water conservation in Singapore?

I can help by conveying the message of the importance of water conservation to the people around me, such as my friends and family members. Also, we can reuse, recycle and reduce the water we use.
